CYCLING – CITY OF CAPE TOWN IMPLEMENTING 200KM OF CYCLING PATHS

Ever thought about cycling as your means of transport? NO, since you don’t live in Copenhagen, Amsterdam or Hamburg. Imagine being able to step on your bicycle and cycle from the one side of Cape Town to the other, safely! Now you can! The City of Cape Town is implementing over 200km of cycling and walking lanes.

It is about time that the City catches up with its rich cycling heraitage based on the likes of the Cape Argus and the super extreme Cape Epic. Both recognised as top events on the international cycling calendar.

CITY OF CAPE TOWN’S VISION

The vision is to support sustainable transport – people that are using public transport, walking and cycling. They want people to walk or cycle to their destination, if not possible, to cycle to a bus station and hop on the MyCiti bus with their bike and cycle further from the drop off point. Alternatively, they could lock up their bike at the bus station and take the bus.

NON-MOTORISED TRANSPORT LANES

The launch of the new MyCiti non-motorised transport lanes between the inner city of Cape Town and Table View was launched on 1 February 2011. This 16km cycle path runs along the Integrated Rapid Transport bus route and is the longest dedicated cycle lane in South Africa. Click here to view a full map of the cycling path.

Similar lanes are being implemented along MYCiti bus lanes across the city. A network of smaller lanes now connects up the major routes, resulting in a network covering the whole of Cape Town. Read more on what the Argus had to say about “bike friendly” Cape Town.

CYCLING AND WALKING PATHS

City officials responsible for non-motorised transport have drawn up a master plan for cycling paths and walking paths across the city with paths built in areas including Athlone, Gatesville, Khayeltsha, Gugulethu, Nyanga, Philippi, Strand, Brackenfell, Kuils River and Eerste River, as well as along Liesbeek Parkway.
Detailed designs were completed and tenders went out in July 2011 for more paths in Delft, Belhar, Retreat, Atlantis, Joe Slovo and Blackheath. These paths are expected to be completed by May 2012.

Please Please Please can we have a cycle path over Ou Kaapse Weg, Boys Drive and Constantia neck. Cycling these is not far from suicidal but they are they only ways to enter the Southern Suburbs from further South.

Hey. I mainly need to firmly leave a good brief comment and let you recognize that I’ve been pursuing your particular web-site for quite some time. Keep up the remarkable efforts and I’ll be checking back again yet again relatively soon.

Got something to say? Go for it!
